Topic 6 - Community, Culture  & Media

What is one thing you could do to use online social networks/

communities to help teens get involved in the real world?

In the "real world" a common response I get when I ask people how to do something is, " I don't know, look on Pinterest". It seems to be a go-to source of quick information and ideas. Any interest in the world you could possibly have is explored in a multitude of angles and access to the information is grouped like an index. I would set up this website with a classroom account on a computer that the classroom had access to. I think this would be a helpful online network to learn from because unlike google or the traditional search engine, Pinterest allows you to search within particular search or what I call "sub-searches".

These "sub-search" options can help students go from broad to narrow understanding of ideas, look at information in many different contexts, allow the student to control  search results in accordance with their interests, and also give them a tool elaborate their ideas based off of suggestions from other users. This is much like how the real world works anyways, we often get information form other sources, that prompt or influence which direction we choose to further our knowledge.

There is also a category that would be helpful for teachers. If you search under education you will get suggested "sub-searches" like reading, writing or math for example. In these, there fun and effective ways of learning from suggested lessons for teachers and even step by step learning activities already prepared that the whole class can participate in together to guide their learning on a certain subject.

This will introduce to students how I find most people locate their information today anyways, so it will help them in their learning, keep the information and learning activity interesting as well as teach them a skill they can use in the "real world" to find answers an information they might be looking for.
